We are currently interviewing cadets and students interested in working at American Cruise Lines as a Deckhand from May-August 2023. American Cruise Lines (ACL), the largest US flagged cruise line in the United States. Our growing fleet sails unique itineraries along inland and coastal waterways of the East Coast, Pacific Northwest, Columbia-Snake Rivers and Mississippi-Ohio-Cumberland Rivers. Our ships are 99 Ton, state-of-the art, designed for safe operation and five-star service to 100-185 guests.
Deckhands are entry-level marine crewmembers trusted with the opportunity to assist in vessel operations standing helm, gangway, and security watches. Deckhands complete extensive daily cleaning and maintenance tasks, while also assisting with key guest services such as laundry, garbage, and luggage. Our Crews are team-oriented, self-disciplined, and hands-on workers. Our Marine Team is positive, people-oriented, meticulously groomed every day in service to our guests and as examples to fellow crewmembers. Deckhands are the face of American Cruise Lines, greeting every guest boarding our ships at the gangway.
Engine Room Attendants typically have a good understanding of diesel, electric, plumbing and HVAC systems. They are the primary person onboard doing preventative maintenance but also troubleshooting and diagnostics for these systems so we can coordinate further resources. Attendants perform liquid load transfers, watering, refueling, and used oil disposal, and report directly to the shipboard Mate daily.
Third Mates work alongside Deckhands and the Mates, building their skills on the bridge to become more comfortable operating vessels of that size. They work alongside Deckhands, providing leadership and coaching as well as using your license on some vessels to operate the passenger launch that we use to ferry guests on coastal itineraries where we anchor out.
Each role provides opportunities and responsibilities throughout marine operations, working alongside our seasoned Captains and Mates to help keep the ship operating smoothly and safely.

Responsibilities for Deckhands (Third Mate and Engine Room Attendant also partake in some of these)

Assist in vessel operations standing helm, gangway, and security watches.

Standing helm watches assisting the Captain and Mate in steering the vessel

Handling lines, gangways, anchors, and marine equipment under the guidance of Captains and Mates

Standing gangway and deck watches including security, maintenance, and passenger assistance duties

Loading and unloading guest luggage, ship stores, garbage, and daily logistics tasks

Cleaning all exterior decks, verandas, windows, furniture, and marine spaces

Washing, drying, and folding all ship laundry

Maintain continual professional grooming and uniform appearance

Continual availability to assist guests and crew

Rotate through day-night watch and task schedules averaging 12-hrs daily
Qualifications

You are at least 18 years old and have graduated from high school.

Physically strong, with stamina to work long hours

Well-groomed and clean appearance

Friendly and outgoing interpersonal skills, strong communication skills and the desire to learn

College experience preferred

US Citizenship or legally authorized to work in the United States

Ability to clearly speak and write the English Language

25T Masters license (minimum) needed for Third Mate applicants

Pre-Employment Background Check and Drug Test: Under Federal Law and the Department of Transportation we are required to pre-employment drug test all shipboard employees. This includes testing for Marijuana and other controlled substances. We are also an alcohol free company with no tobacco or vaping use allowed onboard.
Schedule and Location
-
This is a full-time position where you will be working typically 12 hours a day in a rotational schedule. Flexible scheduling that can work well for Cadets seeking summer opportunities.

You will be living and working onboard one of our vessels and could be assigned to any of our itineraries.
