Simply put, Capt. Sanders has been a pioneer in the Maritime education industry for over 35 years.  He founded U.S. Maritime Academy (USMA) in 1987 in Hawaii and spent the next decade sailing throughout the islands preparing mariners for their Coast Guard Captain's License examinations.  His success led to being amongst the first instructors in the country to be approved to offer License training in lieu of CG examinations. His curricula use texts and examinations he authored, producing over 4000 Captains to date.

Always a wave ahead, Capt. Sanders was approved to do live online presentations long before the pandemic. USMA was recently approved to conduct live on-line examinations - again a first in the industry. When asked what he thought separated him from the rest of the pack, he credited his mother for her advice to always be available to his students and retain his passion and humanistic approach for the material he presents. Call him - he will answer!

Capt. Sanders has been messing about boats since he was seven and has over 50,000 blue water miles under various keels about the globe. His home port is in the Northwest with frequent visits to his other roots on the Great Lakes and Hawaii. Capt. Sanders has sailed his wooden S&S vessel for 43 years and recently joined the dark side with a Monk Sr. trawler.  They both are swinging on their moorings off Marrowstone Island while he broadcasts classes from his cabin in the woods.

Testimonials

"First of all, I want to thank you for helping me get my license! It’s helped me get jobs in Alaska, Antarctica, and Mexico. Its opened many doors that I don’t think I would have had without it. It’s been a lot of fun driving boats around all over the world!"   -Ross
